About the Plastic Alternative Pledge

A Program by Water Warrior Alliance

The Plastic Alternative Pledge is a voluntary initiative by Water Warrior Alliance, aimed at reducing plastic waste by helping businesses and individuals make more sustainable choices. From apparel and skincare to tableware and packaging, the Pledge supports a shift away from synthetic and toxic materials like plastic and Styrofoam toward eco-friendly alternatives.

This free, flexible program is designed to encourage—not enforce—positive change. Participants can adopt any source-reduction practices that align with their values and capabilities. Whether it’s switching to compostable cups or reef-safe sunscreen, every step makes a difference.

Why Take the Pledge?

  • Free social media promotion and marketing assets (stickers, plaques, etc.)

  • Inclusion in a growing network of eco-conscious businesses

  • Increased visibility among sustainability-minded tourists and locals

  • Opportunity to collaborate on cleanups and events in parks, beaches, and waterways

By joining together, we can inspire larger policy shifts—like banning single-use plastics at city properties and major events—and show just how easy and cost-effective it is to go green.

Special Thanks to Our Pledged Partners
We proudly recognize the businesses that have already committed to the Plastic Alternative Pledge. We encourage others to reach out to them and see firsthand how simple and impactful these changes can be.

GreenPolly is one of the first bags to be made of 80-90% post-consumer (not industrial) plastic and a renewable source (10-20% Green Plastic from Sugarcane).

Pledge Policy at Events

All Water Warrior Alliance events operate in full alignment with our Pledge Policy. This applies to everyone involved, including vendors, sponsors, exhibitors, and partners.

Participation in our events requires adherence to the following standards:

  • No single-use plastics

  • No synthetic fibers (e.g., polyester giveaways, plastic packaging)

  • No harmful beauty or personal care products, including hand sanitizers and sunscreens with chemical ingredients known to damage marine ecosystems

These requirements are already incorporated into our vendor and sponsor contracts, making compliance simple and seamless. This ensures that every aspect of the event supports our mission and environmental values.

For city co-sponsored events or any event following municipal guidelines, we recommend integrating our pledge standards just as you do with your approved vendor lists. The following sustainable suppliers are strong local options we work with regularly:

Auburn Supply Co. – A reliable and local vendor resource. Heidi and her team will create a dedicated page for each event and help hosts identify and source environmentally responsible alternatives. If a vendor already uses sustainable products, no changes are needed. Auburn Supply handles the research and provides items at comparable cost, including logo-ready merchandise.

Stream2Sea – Provider of reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen and personal care products.

GreenPoly – Supplier of compostable, plant-based alternatives to traditional single-use items.

These vendors are prepared to support event needs of all sizes and make it easy to eliminate harmful materials without adding extra work for hosts or city staff. By maintaining high standards and providing accessible solutions, we ensure that our events reflect the values we stand for — clean water, responsible stewardship, and lasting impact.
